When i download some videos they won't play because a pop up box says one or more codecs may be missing.
This happens mostly with avi files.
any thoughts as to what and where these codecs can be found?

this seems to occur randomly due to certain windows updates - try doing a system restore to a few weeks back and try again
Constantly downloading codecs for different videos can be a real pain in the @rse. A much better idea is to use a decent media player which can play videos irrespective of the codecs used when creating them. The (free) video player which is most frequently recommended here on AB (as well as on BBC Radio 4, BBC World Service, and in PC magazines) is VLC:

Switch to VLC and you can forget all about codec problems.

If you prefer not to try the free player suggested by Buenchico, you can download this:
http://www.free-codecs.com/download/Codec_Pack _All_in_1.htm
You should then be able to view just about any .avi files
try vcl media player find it on google it plays almost everything
djeffs - you mean VLC ??
