(1)Microsoft Student 2006 Complete package -

I am getting a laptop for going to university (I am doing law), and I'm just wondering whether this would be a useful package to have. Could anyone give me any information about the type of documents that can be produced, and the functions it has. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

(2) Also I don't know what make, memory and processor of laptop that would be the best for a student, and I would be very grateful if anyone could give me any advice.

looking at what is in there ... I'd have thought your money could be better spent on the student version of office.

As for the laptop ....
get the highest spec you can afford.
It might as well see you through .... and a decent one can do everything a student needs (except ironing!)
As well as the boring stuff like writing essays you'll can use it as an entertainment console for Games, music, video, Freeview tv etc etc ... for when you can't afford to hit the bars.

as for specifics ... you'll get 100 answers ... and they'll all be different .... it's almost true to say that big names got to be big names 'cause they last a little longer.

best thing is to hit the newsagents or supermarket ... and browse a few PC mags - see what they say

i have ms student 2006. It used to be called encarta so if you remember that you will know what to expect. Its an alternative to carrying an encyclopedia around with you. Good thing about it though is it is continually updated with new info as it is discovered.

As ACtheTROLL says, buy the student version of Office 2007. This has Word, Excel, Powerpoint and OneNote.

We got lots of questions here about what laptop to buy.

But there is no definitive answer. Here are some things that may help:

Almost ANY processor will be good enough if all you are doing is word processing or surfing the net. A fast processor is only required for those playing games or doing thing like video editing.

Most of the time the processor is sitting there watiing for YOU to do something.

Any laptop you buy will probably have Windows Vista on it nowadays, so I would go for 1G of memory (1024Mb).

Some may come with 512Mb but that is a tad on the low side.

Make - well most laptops are made by only about 3 companies (mostly in Tainwan) and then "badged" by the different companies.

There are lots of good makes - Sony, Toshiba, Dell, Acer etc

I must say Acer seem to be going after the "low price" market at the moment, and are selling through Tescos so maybe try them.

It comes with a 17" screen which is bigger than most, 1Gb of memory, Vista home premium, and a DVD writer.

Couple of extra things:

If you are taking the laptop away to university GET IT INSURED. It is a sad fact that many PCs and laptops are stolen at universities.

Also, make sure you backup your work to CD or DVD on a regular basis.

You hear so many stories of people who lose their laptop (stolen or lost or it breaks) and say "I lost 2 years work".

There is no excuse to lose 2 years work. Backup your work regularly (weekly) and keep the backup CDs or DVDs separate from the laptop.

Then if it is lost or stolen you have not lost all your university work.
