if its just a cut, not a large amount, it would depend on circumstances as redcrx says, was he an innocent party, did he provoke, was he off work if so how long, as it affected him emotionally, what expenses has been incurred by the assault, lots of things to take into consideration!!

the guy was at a party, there was a verbal discussion and then the other guy went and got a baseball bat. He hit my friend twice so hard that the second hit snapped the baseball bat. He was lucky his skull is made of concrete i guess.

Your friend would get very little compensation from a court, maybe �50 or �100. He would be better contacting the Criminal Injuries Compensation Authority who often award more substantial sums, even where an offender hasn't been convicted. The minimum is �1000 but it sounds like his injuries wouldn't attract such a large figure. It's not the nature of the assault that attracts the compensation, it's the severity of the injury.

Contrary to the content of the first two posts, compensation from CICA does not 'depend upon the circumstances'. There's a fixed payment for each type of injury to each part of the body. (The only way that 'circumstances' can play a part is that the CICA could, for example, reduce their payment if the victim had a criminal record. The actual circumstances which led to the injuries would not normally affect the level of the award). However, as Davec886 indicates, if the amount is calculated to come to less than �1000, the payout is nil.
