Advice please

I've been working part time at a environmental consulting firm as a hydrogeologist for about 6 months and am about to go full time. I really like my job, and I have not been looking for work else where. The other day, I got a phone call from a state agency that does geological and hydrogeological research, and they basically told me that they were interested in persuading me to work for them. At this stage in my career, I feel I have to listen to what they have to offer and weigh my otpions. So I am now waiting for them to sort out the details and make me an offer. The problem is that I live in a very small community, and the person from the state agency who offered me the job is friends with my boss. So, should I tell my boss right away what is happening or should I wait until I get an official offer? I don't want to burn any bridges if I can help it. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

It begs the question however where this lady got your details from and why they are pursuing you, perhaps your boss has already spoken to his "friend" and feels you would be more valued and have better career progression somewhere else.
Theres no harm in having a general chat with your boss, especially as your hours are about to change, and mention about the firms career progression - see what he says!!
