Waterloo is the UK's largest station, covering an area of 24.5 acres. One of its most notable features is the Victory Arch, built of Portland Stone. This commemorates the London and South Western and the Southern Railway men who gave their lives in the First and Second World Wars.
Edinburgh Waverley railway station is the main railway station in the Scottish capital Edinburgh. Covering an area of over 25 acres (101,000 m) in the centre of the city, it is the second largest mainline railway station in the United Kingdomthe largest being Waterloo station in London. It is the northern terminus of the East Coast Main Line

Thanks again to both of you. I have a gut feeling that Clapham Junction is the required answer. ("gut feelings" are probably not the best way to answer quizzes!).
Wikipedia states "The main railway station Clapham Junction (which is actually in Battersea) is the largest and busiest railway junction in the UK, being the place where routes to the west and southwest of London converge."
I'll let you now when I get the answer.
Thanks

Hallo again. I don't know whether this is still active, but I went to the horse's mouth - National Rail - who have what they call a Teaching Zone, presumably intended for schools. They came back saying that Waterloo at 24.5 acres was the largest. I then sent them Wickedtongue's information, and also the screed about Edinburgh. Their reply is below, so all very mysterious. .
The man at Network Rail has come back and sait that Waterloo is the
largest at 24.5, so the other information is wrong.

Paul

You're possibly no longer interested, but I hate giving up. I contacted National Rail, and their reply is below for what it's worth.
Thank you for your email of 28 April 2007 regarding the sizes of various
stations across the UK.
I can confirm to you that Waterloo Station is the largest station in the
UK, covering 24.5 acres.
This, of course, does not include any London Underground property at
this station, and this may be one reason why you have the ambiguous data
below on the exact sizes of these stations. The data given relates only
to the station itself and platform areas.
I hope that this information is of use to you.
