Does anyone know why people say to put a fork in the top of your champagne bottle after its opened (to keep the bubbles in it) and if it works and if so, why does it work?

And yes, I know, it shouldn't be around long enough to need something to keep the bubbles in, you should drink it... but I'm interested.

Fork? There was an old wives tale that a silver spoon in the neck would keep the bubbles, but it makes absolutely no difference at all. Bubbles in Champagne last a long time, left upright a layer of CO2 builds up and help keeps thebubbles, but better use a proper airtight closer and put in fridge door.

Thanks, Pinotage...
Just a wee note about Champagne - its a very jealous drink and does not like to share - meaning if you try and drink something before or after your champagne cocktail, you will end up with a terrific hangover, and not in a good way. Avoid all other types of alcohol with champagne and you should be fine.
