is there a breed of hen of which the cockerel does not crow as i want to put some chickens on my allotment the local council say you can have hens but no crowing cockerel

Don't know if it is only an old wifes tale, but I was told that as the **** always roosts on the highest perch in the coop that to stop him crowing you put the perch so near the roof that he cann't get his head back to crow. As I said might only be a country story but you never know.

Sorry, the perch thing won't work. Roosters only crow a few times from the perch, then go down and proclaim their territory with full gusto.

Unfortunately, many people object to the jovial sound of a happy rooster crowing his heart out and enjoying life.

I have three cockerels.Although I live in thecountry side I do have one neighbour who complains,but then again she complains about the hens clucking and the sparrows singing on her guttering.She moved out of the town and I don't think she likes country living.Why move to the country side ?Deffinatley a territorial thing.I have never heard of a breed that doesn't crow.

I have also heard you can have them decrowed at the vets but this sounds awfully crule.

Are you thinking of breeding,is this why you want a cockerel ?
This is the only reason I have cockerels.Hens do lay with out a cockerel being present.

There is one that gives a sort of embarrassed and very muted half crow.

I don't know the name of the breed but they were in a garden next door to where we stayed on holiday and I was so thankful for this pathetic sound as there were about 30 of them.

The whole lot, both hens and cockerels were quite small and had a punky look on their heads.

My Buff Orpinton cockerel hasa very deep crackily crow.

I honestly can't remember, feebee.

It was about five years ago, but I've never forgotten the almost crowless cockerels, very sweet 'hairstyles' -and the small stature. Not at all the size of normal poultry.

Appenzellers are small bantams with a sticky up plume on the top of there head usually black and white.

thank's for all your answers it looks like just hens with no ****. i wanted a pew er breed anconas and breed my own there after so now it looks like black rock or some other hybrid just for eggs and not for show

Hey, febee, I have only one cockerel left now, but I had three or four in my high days of breeding different species. I ran a B&B business in those days too, and when someone came down in the morning complaining about the noise I'd ask how the eggs tasted, and politely point out that shop eggs weren't nearly so good! And to be honest, after a couple of days the guests could sleep through the crowing, so I don't know what your neighbour's complaining about!
Our house faces the road, but has a huge garden and big fields at the back. The road is noisy, a darned sight noisier than the birds, and I know which side of the house I'd prefer to sleep on!!
