lonely dog

My daughter is bothered by her neighbours' dog.
It is a greyhound, and is fine until it is left alone.
Since her neighbours both work, this is every week
day. As soon as it is alone, it begins to whine and
bark, and this continues until one of them comes
home. She has told them about this, but they seem
unable or unwilling to do anything about it.

She doesn't want to get the local dog warden
involved, but she is getting desperate. And it also
seems unfair to the dog, if the problem is simply
that it doesn't like being left alone. Any advice will
be welcomed.

we have had the same with a dog next door, luckily the owners have been responsible and got the dog a muzzle - to stop dog barking
why does your daughter not see if anyone else in her road has a issue with this dog and mabye get a petition
or get a few people to have afriendly chat with the owners

if its becomming a real problem i would suggest speaking to your council - who can fit a noise monitor
or visiting citizens advice for some help x

Surely a muzzle doesn't really tackle the root of the problem-and also doesn't it prevent access to water, and food/toys-thus exacerbating the problem.

I am surprised your daughter's neighbours haven't responded to a polite chat-most people prefer that to having authorities involved straight away...

redhead23's idea re. CAB and involving other locals is really good. I think you can phone the RSPCA for advice rather than to notify them of the problem. If the dog is being left for too long, and it is this unhappy, then it's definitely not fair. I understand that people have to work but allowances should be made.

Could your daughter's neighours not ask a friend to pop by and spend time with their dog? Is there any way your daughter could help out?

unfortunately... i was this person until a few months ago. We couldnt leave our 9 month old staffy alone at all! i sometimes would pay someone to sit with him when we was at work but it just made him worse. Our neighbours had had enough and there was only one option left....we had the decency to move out and my partners mum agreed to watch over our pup whilst we are at work...its working great! x They have obviously spoiled and given the dog too much attention and this has made the dog this way. Unfortunately unless they find someone who is available to sit with the dog this wont change, our dog still whines if theres no room for him to sit on the couch (totally our fault) I suggest you forward this suggestion onto the owners, and if they dont comply with you contact ur local council. i do feel for you and you shouldnt have to be subjected to someone elses problem xx good luck xx

Thank you all for your suggestions. I'm happy
to report a satisfactory end to it all. The dog has
gone. Its owners seem to have finally realised
that it was in the dog's own interests not to leave
it alone all day. Although the man next door is on
friendly terms, unfortunately the woman will not
speak, despite several approaches by my daughter.
