After my question the other day about it and reading the replies I rang the hospital to ask if I could have it under a general anaesthetic as I said I was so nervous and had heard not too good things about it. But they said that there is no way I can have a general and so can only have the spray and a local anaesthetic so I am now cacking myself!!!

I too was really cacking it, i really worked myself up about it for days. I read a few stories on the internet about what people were saying what had happened to them when they had one done. The only thing that bothered me was when they put the spray on my throat, you get a choking feeling. Honestly there's nothing to worry about.

awww thanks for that! I think the thing that is bothering me the most is the reason I am having it is because I keep choking on food, and so I am panicking that as soon as they put the tube/camera down my throat I will panic and start to choke .
A lot of people get anxious/worried and in some cases hysterical about having a gastroscopy. I know it's easier said than done, but relax. Have the throat spray and i won't feel too uncomfortable. It'll be over before you know it and you'll be away in no time.

Having a gastroscopy under a GA is very risky and rarely done. Avoid that option if you can.

Good luck, relax and think positive!
Hi PInk, I've had one done. It wasn't pleaseent but it is over quickly. I didn't get an option for an LA, just the spray wich tastes like minty bananas! You'll have a scratchy throat afterwars and wonder what you were so worried about! You'll be grand.

Thanks you lot. I have actually woken up with a really sore throat today so hope that has cleared up by next tuesday - will be bloomin glad when the thing is over and done with! What a right baby I am. lol
I have also had one without the LA and as tiggertan says it's over quite quickly and you get over it a lot quicker without the LA. I had the choice but you have to hang around for the effects to wear off if you do have one and I hate hospitals. I had to have one for much the same reason as you so I was concerned about choking but once the tube gets past a certain point all you feel is a little discomfort. Having said that, if you feel that you will be better with a sedative then go for it!
Good luck!
don't worry pinkey,it'll be fine,no need to worry. i had one and it was a piece of cake, a lot of worrying about nothing. iv'e been in hospital a few times and the thought of anything is always worse than the doing of it.
my hubs has had 4 gastroscopies and although not pleasant, definately not painful just a a bit uncomfortable. didnt see your original post so dont know what your problem is, but my husband is now back to full fitness with no problems and has been discharged from the hospital good luck
pinkfizz just have nice thoughts and let your mind take you somewhere nice and relax.
