Non floweing Wisteria

I have asked this question before but not had a decent answer so far, so here goes again. I moved in to my property in May 2002. The wisteria had gone mad and spread all over the front of the house (all leaves and no flowers). I cut it back so it didnt cover the windows, get in the gutter etc. Each year has passed and I prune every August and Feb (12inches then 6 inches). Still it hasnt flowered. It grows leaves like there is no tomorrow. It is on the front of the house which faces East. I have fed it and treated it pretty well over the last 5 years with no reward. I was told before that if it was grafted from a poor flowerer then it may only flower once every 7 years. If this is true I will probably wait another 2 years. If not I may dig it up and plant a new one. Any ideas please

The flower buds are susceptible to damage by late frosts or cold winds. I think they should face south or west. I may be wrong but if they are in a place where they get the early morning sun after a frosty night this could cause the flower buds to be damaged.

I have heard that it can take up to seven years for some Wisteria to settle and produce flowers. However not that they flower every seven years. I would not dig it up but I would plant a different one ( white if your origional is blue or vice versa, so that you will be able to tell which is which ) leaving the origional to support the new one as it has lovely foliage any way, so is performing a task for you.

sense4all, I was going to try that (planting a new one beside it) but didn't think of planting a different colour. Good idea!! I also agree that the foliage is lovely but in the spring/summer, I am out there every 2 weeks trimming it back otherwise it will take over (inside the tiles, over the roof gutter). I think all this plants energy is directed to producing masses of leaves and no buds!

Hi Happy face you may like to look at this sight The Laurels Nursery , i also have had probs with Wisteria not flowering there are lots of diff ones some flower before the leaves come i have got the wrong type and will be starting again by ordering one from the Laurels put in www.thelaurelsnursery.co.uk/wisteria and good luck

It sounds to me as if the wisteria is being too well fed. At my last house mine was planted over the drain and when it burst the wisteria put on huge green growth but no flowers. I have some in my present garden amd they flourish in the poorest of soils both in shade and full sun. Like vines they seem to flourish and flower if made to work hard for their living.
