Can dogs smile ?

My wife is adamant that our Golden Retriever smiles from time to time.Im sure i have read somewhere that although dogs can express emotions im not entirely convinced he smiles.Can anyone settle this argument for us & make me �10 better off.Haha.

My Springer Spaniel smiles.She will tilt her head back,her eyes go slitty and her mouth definatley gets longer as in a broad grin(no teeth showing).It totally freaks me out!
and sometimes I think that they even laugh at us too.
I was always told that if a Samoyed smiles at you, make a swift exit as it is a sign it will bite you!
My Samoyed only seems to smile when he is scratching an itch and it does make us laugh, its sort of an 'ahhhhhhh thats better' grin!
Dalmations are famous for their smiles.
I used to have a labrador who licked my bare feet & I'll swear she grinned when she tickled the soles of my feet!

My yorkie James, he smiles regularly, especially if he wants something!

I have a yorkie that smiles, we also have a mongrel that smiels everytime she sees someone she was a rescue dog I think shes just please she now cared for, we have had her 9 years and shes still smiling I don't think she can believe she's been lucky enough to come to a dog made house, we have 15 dogs in all and they are all loved and spoilt
