can't record from sat

have sat decoder (not sky) scart vcr out connected to line in (decoder) on my dvd recorder and wanted to record some italian channels but all i'm getting is a black screen with kinda flickering interference. Can anyone suggest how i should do it? does my dvd recorder actually need to tune the channels in before it records them?

Tune your DVD recorder to AV channel (Depending on which SCART socket you're using will be either AV1 or AV2). Make sure your SAT decoder is set to channel you want. You should be able to then record your programme.

Don't get what you mean- i've got the decoder out connected to dvd recorder in- do you mean the input on the recorder is either av1 or av2?

Yes. The SCART input on DVD. That SCART input will either be chanel number AV, AV1, AV2 etc, depending on number of SCART sockets you have on your DVD.
