Most blocks of flats in London have this problem from time to time - including mine!

You can buy plug in clickers, that produce a sound that scares them away, but is inaudible to humans. they really do work but are a tad on the expensive side.
Ive lived in the canaries for 5 years now, and the best method ive found is my two cats. I never see any Cookas but i do hear the odd crunching in the night, and find the odd leg the next morning.

I know how you feel, I'm terrified of them! The cockroach spray sold in supermarkets abroad is very effective. I sprayed some around the entrance to my apartment in Fuerteventura and there were lines of dead roaches outside for about 5 days afterwards. in the morning, before you go out, close the windows and doors, spray all around the room, especially the edges, include the walls and curtains etc. Leave the windows and doors shut and go out for the day, when you return air the room (coz it will stink) and it should be ok.
