I went for my 3 yearly smear this week and the nurse has told me that I have a cervical polyps, she is informing my GP who will ask for an appointment at the gyno clinic at my local hospital. I have been on line to get more info on this condition, I'm just wondering if any of the AB ladies have had the same and does it hurt having them removed.

I was diagnosed with cervical cancer back in the early 90ts and the treatment and pain was nothing I have ever exsperienced ever in my life, I felt like I was being treated like a lump of meat, I had to have lazer and as I kept bleeding I was cauterised which was like having a red hot poker inside me, this procedure was done 5 times on the day.

So you can imagine my worry, after what happened to me all those years ago has left a deep impression about any treatment to do with this "area", am I worrying about nothing, please give me some reassurance for I'm thinking about it all the time, why do us woman have a rough deal when it comes to our private bite's!........ X X X :-(

Hi cat woman - I'm so sorry to hear you're having a few problems healthwise.

I've had cervical pre-cancerous cells myself & had it sorted by having a cone biopsy under general anesthetic, so was none the wiser. I was a bit sore afterwards, but was soon on the mend.

Couldn't you explain to the Consultant that you're extremely nervous & would prefer to be sedated? I'm sure there must be some way of them putting you at ease.

Hi cat woman :-) You have been through the mill haven't you love . You will be ok having the polyps removed , shouldnt feel a thing , and the procedure doesn't take long .

I've had exactly the same problems as you on both counts.

When I had the polyps removed, it took about 15 minutes (at the very most), they froze everything before snipping off the polyps. You don't feel a thing - I promise.

The most uncomfortable part of it is when you start to 'defrost', which will be around half an hour after the procedue and the uncomfortable feeling stayed with me for a couple of hours after.

Get yourself a cake of choccy, an Audrey Hepburn movie, a duvet and pamper yourself for the rest of the day after the procedure.

I too am sorry to hear you are suffering. I have never had cervical polyps, but in 2001, I had to undergo laser surgery to remove cancerous cells following a severly abnormal smear. I remember the extreme pain and the heavy bleeding afterwards and I am still having to have smear tests every year but thankfully they have been normal since.
I will never miss a smear test again.

Hi, thank you all for your kind words of reassurance, as you know the exsperience I endured several years ago with the removal of the cancer cells never left my mind. Thank you "Xiomara" for the info on how they do the procedure, l'm pleased to learn that it's going to be pain free. I think no woman can understand what it's like to go through these problem's until it happens to them.
I agree with you "Emz" about never missing a smear test, after I had my treatment for the cancer cell's, I too had to have a smear every years up to the first 5 years after, then it went to 3 years, personally I think it should be every 2 years. Thank you all again, I will let you all know when I get the appointment for clinic.

I really do wish you all the best. It's scary to think that for the sake of a few minutes embarassment, it could have cost me my life. And I was completely symptomless at the time.

Have had polyps removed in a day surgery under general anaesthetic. Was not painful at all afterwards. They sent me off with a packet of painkillers but did not need to take any.
