Another suggestion is to make all the speeches before the reception meal is served. The guests are usually happy with drinks etc and those who are nervous about making speeches don't have to worry throughout the meal and perhaps not enjoy it so much. Went to a wedding where this happened and it went down very well. The Groom, Best man and father of the bride did their speeches very well and then could relax. The cutting of the cake was left until the meal was over.
