Everyone knows what the director does, but what exactly is the job of the producer and executive producer in the movies. And is it different in TV?

The producer is the one who puts up the money. That's the answer boiled down, but often times they'll want to protect their investment and thus will do their best to ensure they make their money back. Some producers trust their directors and let them do their thing, but others can become overbearing and hijack a film production.
