no music while driving

i have a mk3 vw golf. the stero works when the key is in the first position but when i turn the ignition on to start the car all power to the stero cuts off. why?

The starter motor is taking all the battery power to turn over the engine. It happens to every vehicle unless the radio/CD/tape player has a separate power source.
