I imagine there is some muslim councillor somewhere who is trying to, but at the moment we have Henry V, Drake, Nelson, Churchill and numerous key figures like Dickens, Darwin and Shakespeare.
I am very proud to be British, moreover English, but I am not proud at our culture and heritage being eroded in front of my very eyes. Apart from fox hunting. That was just barbaric.

I never thought i would say this but i have read your statement ' joe ' and i have to say that i agreed with every thing you said. My country is very important to me and i dont think its as bad as people make out.
As joe was saying it is steeped in history and we have had some great leaders (some not so great!) as for pollution its not as bad as some and at least we are trying to do something about it unlike some of course (china, america)
As for the weather its not cloudy its not raining and ill be having fresh fish and veg for dinner so i dont think there is any thing wrong with our country.
If other people dont like our country well then dont come here then, bog off!!

Tut tut!
Remember Scottish, Welsh & English aren't recognised nationalities...we are all British ;o)
Yes ~ I am proud to be British. Just because there are some folk who behave appallingly and there are some undesirable places to live shouldn't make us any less proud. Think of the GOOD things we have.

I have to agree with fine, thanxs - although pippa says it is not a nationality, I am usually very proud to be scottish - and occasionally ashamed when I see some of the behaviour by my fellow Scots - I have no problem with any of the other countries or nationalities that make up Britain, I just never think of myself as British.
It might not be paradise on earth, but it isn't hell either. We actually have great weather compared to most places, only it's unreliable. There are leaves on the trees for most of the year. We do have social problems, but we have freedom of speech and the political freedom to sort out our problems.
As Joe-the-Lion says, we have our history, and that is well worth holding on to. But let's not lose hope in the future either. For all our problems, we've come through tough times before, but we keep going.
If anything, our biggest threat today is from modern town planners and property developers, who seem determined to destroy any trace of heritage or history to make a fast buck. They succeed where fires, plagues, invaders and civil wars failed before.
