How much did a gladiator get paid?

Having watched the repeats of Gladiators my flatmate and I were wondering how much they got paid to be a gladiator? If anyone knows we would greatly appreciate it!

Gladiators were trained slaves, and got 'paid' with the chance to live and fight another day. However, they could probably count on payment from wealthy patrons who bet on them.
