been an old mum now this suggestion may sense crazy to you. Is it a new cot, is it a big cot. you see it is not you! baby can not sense you in that {big place} alone!
Try to make the cot little smaller by adding rolled up babys blankets around and inside the cot.make it cosy but not stuffy. try this first ?

I agree that it is better in the long term to put her in awake, however, if you really need to put her in already asleep (I've been there!) then sit down next to the cot so that you are about the same level as the cot - they seem to notice when they go from high to low! Put her in the cot, but still hold on until she seems more settled then gradually removed your arms until only one hand remains just touching her chest or arm, then when she seems to be out for the count slowly take your hand away - you may need to keep gently rock her as she lies in the cot until you slowly stop before you take your hand away. My husband was a master at this and we only really had to use it when they were very tiny or not fully well. It didn't do my boys sleep pattern any long term harm - the went to sleep by themselves in their own cots/beds most of the time. Hope it works for you - take care!
how old is your baby? if shes afew months i would do controlled crying, it sounds cruel but in the long run , they r much happier as can settle themselves. but i personally wouldnt do it if they were under say 4 months. i also got a "wave machine" for my son when he was tiny, that worked. my daughter had a cuski, shes four and still has it now.
Thank you for your help, my daughter is 5 1/2 months now, shes only breastfed as wont take a bottle, not even with breast milk, or a dummy, she will suck her thumb but i wouldnt say to comfort her. I did try her with a bottle a couple of times when she was 3 weeks old for a couple of weeks but then stopped for a bit then when tried again at 3 months old she wouldnt take it as she had forgotten about the time she had before. i wish my health visitor had explained that to me. I can only breastfeed her to sleep I have tried to to the elastic band technique but to be honest she would cry more when i picked her up and i couldnt console her, after an hour and a half it just wasnt working. I believe in everthing natural and I understand the cry thing but if she gets histerical I cant leave her there to cry as she continues to remember beong hysterical in my arms for hours after and it takes her a long time to get over this. I dont think this is right. I have her trust and when this happens its mistrust.
So I want to perservere but be relistic
thanks

Clever litlle thing! she cry because she can sense that you are not close to her. And she is holding you "at ramson" with the breastfeeding. If i may express myself this way.
At this stage she is not getting the best out of your milk but she has this lovely bond with you and you are taking this away at bed time so it is a bit scary for this little one.
I do not know the routine that you have with feeding time
or have you introduced soft food in her diet.
Look at her cot too make sure that she goes on a warm mattress and a cosy surrending with one of your jumper or clothing so she can smell you too!

my son was the same with breastfeeding - we couldn't get him to take a bottle at all - we tried all different kinds of bottles - different types of milk from expresssed to formula - I was due to go back to work when he was 5 months but had to delay as he would not take a bottle from anybody - one health visitor recommended that I try to wean him from milk during the day for the time I would be at work, because he would eat solids and would drink water from a cup - but not milk! I got to the day before I was due to go back, I nearly had him off milk during the day, but I was desperate, I called up the HV and got a different one who was near to retiral - she told me that the modern teats were probably too hard after being used to breast, she recommended that I got some of the old fashioned cheap orangie coloured teats that you get in the chemist and bingo - he took it - you might want to try that - get someone else to give it to her while you make yourself scarce so that she can't smell you. I can't remember now whether it was expressed or formula that he took, but it would be worth trying both to give you a break. Good luck.
