Can anyone tell me some sports we brits invented. It's for a study, but i need sports that we really invented, not ones we claimed, or put rules on and later pretended were ours. Thanks in advance
I understand that pole vaulting was invented by the shepherds of the Southern Lake District. Easier to vault over a beck than go through it or round it.
Its a difficult one really, as whilst the modern versions with documented rules may be attributable to one nation in particular most of the sports we now play (excluding ones that require modern inventions such as Formula 1 etc) would be recognised by the ancients. The Greeks and Romans used to kick balls around, so would this class as the invention of football? The ancient Egyptians played a form of bowls/pin bowling.
Did you know that there is evidence to suggest the Brits invented Ice Hockey?
well golf was played in china well before scotland. tennis was in india, but we later put writing rules to it, so that's really there's, and aparently an almost identical game of football was played in china, but they never had an official body. rugby as i know was just a new version of the irish football
Ah well, give it a few years and ALL sports, including Sumo Wrestling, Karate, Camel Racing and Boomerang Throwing will evidently have been found to be the invention of some gentlemen in Illinois (or other such US state).
nah, we didnt invent neither tennis or snooker. snookers about 5centuries old before we began to play it, and we just put the modern day rules on tennis. it was played well before we knew it. c'mon, can anyone tell me a sport we actually invented. im running out of options. ireland's covered, i need british sports. thanks
On The BBC breakfast show this morning they did a spot on the sport of "shin Kicking". Never heard of it before but apparently it was once wide spread thru England & dates from the 12th-13thC
