It may convey the impression of having been the recipient of many addresses (7) ?????er
It isn't usually built by soldiers surely (4)
When it is felt it usually heralds a change on the way (4,4)

Why such an elderly crossword? You seem to have an appropriate name for something from the distant past!

Thanks Christiana for the lightning response. If rare is correct which I think it might well be, then the "wind" clue is ???t ?a??
rare also fits in with "stiffens" for "becomes less flexible", but it doesn't strike me as being very cryptic

Aged mother is decluttering and sent me this crossword from the dt in which she announced her engagement to my father. As for my nom de plume, I have always liked the word and adopted it when I felt I needed one. Fortunately I am not yet extinct!

Heat wave for the wind clue? What a lovely reason to have this old crossword. Yes, I've always liked the word 'behemoth' too.

Heat wave is good and fits in with censure. "Sure" is "certain at the end" but I don't see where the "cen" comes from. Stiffens looks right too, which leaves the one remaining clue "it may convey the impression of having been the recipient of manty addresses" as (7) ?e?t?er

Not very satisfied with this but 'rentier' is one whose income comes from receiving rents - thus he would be a recipient from many addresses but doesn't seem to make any sense with the rest of the clue.

I feel the answer could be "leather" as it can be "impressed" but not quite sure why. It might have had more relevance in 1954!

Other interesting clues are "one of those uplifting things at fun fairs" (4,4) which I believe to be "flip-flap", which rather dates the crossword, and "it has proved rather a come-down this summer" (4) which I believe to be "rain", suggesting a rather wet July and August in 1954!
