The IP protocol is 'routed' (ie different packets can take different paths to reach their destination). The IP route table for a device tells it what physical connection should be used for which destinations. At a 'leaf' PC-type device, this often simply splits into 'local' addresses (use LAN) and 'remote' addresses (use WAN)
