12 Answers
please help my 5 month old jack russell x will not eat tinned dog food or dried food, she is very active and healthy. i have tried pedigree dried food/tinned food/sachets ceaser food, puppy food tinned, i have left any dog food down for about 10mins she goes and sniffs it and it is still there untouched. SHE WILL EAT ANYTHING THAT IS HUMAN FOOD ie cooked chicken ,mince, sausages, mashed potatoe. vegetables, she loves tomatoes, i really do not wish to give her human food and i have refrained from giving in, thanks

Put her food down, then like you have been doing remove it after 10 minutes or so. Offer again (if still edible- if not a fresh lot) the next meal time.
No dog will allow itself to starve- eventually she will cave in and eat it.
Good luck :-)

In addition to BOO's answer, maybe leave the food down for half an hour at mealtimes then remove it. Prevent her getting access to any other food. Don't leave the same food in the bowl for more than one day because it will definitely be starting to go off or be stale by then!
Let us know how you get on.

I agree with the above, I have a GSD, who has always been a picky eater, It got so bad I resorted to handfeeding him
I have managed to get my dog to each two meals aday, it took me nine long days, and a lot of guilt, but I have done it,
He had 10mins before I took the uneaten food of him
DON'T GIVE IN, BY FEELING GUILTY.

First of all,you have a baby there, she is going to be picky for a while untill she gets used to having her food changed as you have stated you are doing to try and get her to eat.
Im not sure if you are giving her puppy food or just tin dog food.
We have had dogs for the past 30yrs from westies..........who are very picky to GSD,'s who in my opinion are even pickier.
We are now down to only one girl,(GSD),who is coming up 11yr,she went off her food when we lost her brother last year and her auntie the year before and we had to tackle food times in a different way.
We feed her a complete twice a day with a boiled egg chopped up for both breakfast and tea,and she loves it.
When they were all puppies they had the same..........a complete lamb and rice (james wellbeloved) puppy ,still i put the egg in,also for extra calcium...........home made rice pudding.Even now..........she has left over veg (if we have some) mixed in her tea instead of the egg. There is nothing wrong with giving a LITTLE human food diced up small just to add a little variety if it gets her to eat then so be it.There are lots more things to try.....................it all depends on how much you are willing to do, always 95% dog food at least and the remainder whatever you have.If you do use a complete, unless you soak it with hot water (boiled) and leave to swell for 10mins.......only give a small amount dry as in the stomach it swells to double its amount and size and that will cause you little puppy to have major trouble. Small amounts of tinned tuna in sunflower oil is another trick.................but as she is still young......i would stick with egg/chicken/veg just as a small mixer.Good luck.

doglady 2 thankyou, i am willing to try anything didn.t realize that complete food needs to be wet, it is puppy food that we have tried her with i am going to add egg tomorrow, i tried her with ceaser today i can.t get hold of it in puppy form, she had a small amount, i have had a number of dogs from puppies and haven/t had this problem, our last dog was a GSD she was three yrs old. 2 months ago we went on holiday and dad came to house and dog sit, we got a phone call to say that she was involved in a car accident unfortunatly she died instantly, i could not bear to come home to an empty house without a dog !!!!!!!!!!!!!!
hi,first or all.............all good dog food should come in puppy form regardless if it is a dry complete or tinned food.
You can give complete dry................however the quantity would have to be less as it does swell when wet or after it is eaten.
The amount of egg isnt too worrying as long as you dont overdo it.If i was you as she is a small dog, what you could do is boil 1 egg and chop finely and just use the one between her 3 small meals.
All it needs is a nice smell in the food to entice her to eat..........little and often wouldnt hurt untill she develops a little more.However.....it isnt going to hurt her haveing small amounts of food like i mentioned before as long as she eats it all up. Try and keep it to the same food ie,the egg or small veg (carrot, brocolli, cauli ) nothing in them will do her harm.As you are trying the food soaked, when you mix the egg or whatever you have in with it,try and give her it when it is still warm, cold food is hard on the tum!!!!!!.Good Luck.

Wow, when I saw this I just had to write you and tell you that I know exactly what you are going through. Mine is two now but when she was a puppy she was so fussy we were afraid she was not eating enough because you could see her ribs. She would not eat for days (not even human food) and on top of that, she was so active that it was somewhat scary. She would throw up bile from not eating and all she would do is cry all the time. Well, all I can say is after a lot of trying to see what works here is what worked for us.
A neighbor had given us a packet and she ate that as if she never saw food before. So now, what we do is mix some of the ceasar with dry food (nutro puppy) and she eats. I mean she will go over look at it and walk away but do not make a fuss leave it down and leave the dog alone. The dog may start to walk over by itself and eat when it does so no praise not any fuss. Even though ours is 2 the vet told us to keep her on puppy food because it has more fat in it. Ours is still as skinny as a stick but healthy she has the biggest muscular legs and that shows the sign the even though the dog may be skinny or not eating enough by your standard that they are eating enough to sustain muscle and that is a good indicator that they are healthy and fit. Just be careful feeding human food it could make them fat you should watch your dog as well on puppy food you may want to keep her on if shes thin enough and then you may see shes putting on to much weight then wean her off to adult. However, the vet said it is perfectly good to keep them on puppy as long as she is thin and its sounds that you have a very active one. Other tip is exercise trust me they will become hungry. Good luck hope to hear how your doing!!

hi just to let you all know that i have finally cracked it. i started by putting dried food in her bowl i left it there say a day, and when it is gone i replaced it with more food she has gone one day or two. she now eats it when of course she feels ready, she is not a very big eater, and will not scoff her food. and she will be one next week, and quess what she has come into season! she is not the puppy but a very mature lady ahhhhhh.
