I have a bed at the bottom of the garden which I regularly lay out with bedding plants, and regularly the foxes trash it. Hot chilli powder has been quite effective in past years, but overnight they have beheaded at least half of the salvias and dug up at least 3/4 of the antirrhinums. I am completely disheartened by it, so I would like to plant a collection of contrasting shrubs as a permanent feature. It gets plenty of sun in the morning, then it is dappled for a while, and by mid-afternoon is mostly in shade. The soil is very good, having had 100s of litres of potting compost over the years.
Does anyone have some ideas for colourful and contrasting shrubs etc, preferably low or not too fast growing ? Thanks.
To keep the fox away I would try growing garlic in between as this works for some animals.
But don't over do it as you might lose your neighbours as well lol.
I'm guessing that the bed is facing east, due to the morning sun it gets, so it's probably best to avoid anything that is frost tender as it may be damaged by rapid thawing.
Philadelphus (mock orange) is a good hardy all- rounder of a shrub which should be just begining to bloom about now. It has lovely white flowers and very fragrant.
The variety P. coronarius 'Aureus' has the added attraction of bright yellow leaves. Good Luck Tbird+
