Can I achieve a wood staining effect on wood by using emulsion paint?

You should be able to water it down to achieve a woodwash effect as long as it is just a basic emulsion with no additives on a "one-coat" system.
You can use woodstain. If the wood doesn't have any natural wood grain and knots effects in it - you can buy a tool to create this effect from most paintshops and from places such as B and Q.
