Invoiced for more than original quote

What is the situation where a party contracts orally with a workman for services to be provided for a certain price and (having completed the work) he invoices the party for a higher amount? Does this higher amount have to be paid?

It really depends on whether the 'quote' was an estimate, (it normally is) but in general, yes if the total charge is reasonable, you have to pay it.

Even if it was a fixed price, there is still the issue of 'fixed price for what?' if extra work was needed it can (sometimes) be charged for.

it would be usual for the contractor to keep the person informed of any changes .. i suppose it will depend if it was an estimate or a direct quote.
I think you may have trouble if it was oral contract as well
