the city of london is called the square mile is it a

really a square mile some of the distances within the city are more than mile apart why is this so can anybody explain this in roman times within the sq mile there were prisons ie fleet markets ie leadenhall smithfield many churches the tower of london to hold all of these surely takes up more than a square mile

It was roughly the area from Ludgate circus below St Paul's to the Tower, and north to the Barbican (there's a bit of the Roman wall by the Museum of London). It's not square and not a mile, but it's not far out.

There's also a difference between a square mile and a mile square.

The first could be 2 miles long by half a mile wide, or 4 miles long by quarte mile wide etc.

The second is 1 mile by 1 mile

i beleive that it isnt an actual mile squared cuz it is almost impossible to tell where the boundaries are... ya know?
