How do I find out how much a private plate is worth on a car I recently purchased? How do I then sell it and have a 'normal' plate put on. The car was registered with he pivate number so here is no 'normal' plate to swop it with
DVLA will issue an age related number when the transfer goes through. The value will depend on the format and the number of letters/numbers. In the end it's worth what anyone is willing to pay. Which is very often less than you think.
One of the ways is to get in touch with a company that sells them, just ring or email them with the number you want to sell and they will value it.
As you want to keep the number to sell get in touch with the DVLA to get the number put on retention, the DVLA will most likely give you the origonal number your car was first registered with to put on your car.
The DVLA will give you instructions on when to fit the plate.
It's worth noting that the 'donor vehicle' which currently has the plate attached MUST have a current MOT in order for the plate to be transferred. If it doesn't, it will have to pass an MOT test before the DVLA can issue you with a standard plate of typical age. It probably won't be the plate it had on it before.
To get an idea of the value of your plate, go to one of the many websites dealing in these (eg regtransfers.co.uk) and search for your number as if you wanted to "buy" it. You may not get your actual one come up, but you will get similar ones. This should put you in the ball park.
Must be the luck of the draw in that case Toureman, I have transferred three and none of them are now wearing the same plate they did before. Same age / original letter, but a completely different plate.
