Etymology: 19c: originally meaning �beggar, from the rags wrapped around beggars feet and worn inside the shoes in place of socks.

My understanding was that it came from Toureg, an Arab.
Probably racist nowadays.

The meaning of a piece of cotton wrapped around the feet in place of stockings predates the word's use as a name for beggars/tramps...presumably because such people were specifically noted for wearing them, as Dot says.
