Keeping flowers fresh

Can you buy stuff that you put into a vase of flowers, into the water, that will keep them looking fresh and healthy for longer?

grandma says : diluted sugar 2 spoonfuls
Mum says : Limonade.

When i buy flowers, i will cut stems in diagonal with a very sharp knife and will plunge the stem in very hot water for about 30 seconds.
In my vase, i will put 2 spoonful of sugar in previously boiled water still luke warm, add to sugar , stir and arrange your flowers .
To keep your flowers beautiful, repeat the same process once a week.
