I was recently turned away from a public house by the gorillas at the door. I was with 2 male friends and it was about 7pm and none of us were drunk. They stopped us and asked how many of us there were. I said just us 3. They said sorry you can't come in as there are too many blokes in here already. Argued that this was just like saying sorry to many whites in here you can't come in to which they had no reply. They refused to give me their name either and since they were wearing badges shouldn't they part with that information? Anyway can i get turned away from a pub because i am a man? Women were being let in and it was not packed so health and safety was not an issue Thanks Piano and Pitcher by the way. *****

You are right. It is not legal. Same problem here in Turkey too. But there is a worse issue here. They take enterance fee for men but not for women. Also they can enter with a group of ladies but you can't enter even with a single friend. Because you are "man". Its not legal but nobody cares about that. Hope someone one day!!!
A landlord, or his agent, can refuse anyone entry with no reason at all. It might not be right but it is legal
I agree with drewhound and disagree.A Licensee(or his/her agents) has the absolute right to refuse to serve anyone for no reason whatsoever. The mistake the doorman made was giving you a reason, this he should not have done.Even with the new licensing laws being introduced in the next 12 months, the Licensee will still have this right. And quite rightly too.
They are being sexist. You could report them to trading standards or office of fair trading or something, but they do have the right to refuse entry to anyone they wish, but cannot refuse on grounds of someones sex. To put it bluntly, they let women in as bait (pussy) to attract PAYING guys. If ALL males totaly boycotted the place then (1) a lot of women "on the pull" wouldn't go in, and (2) they'd be losing money as the only people in there would be females who got in free. I told dating site Udate about their sexist policy and they told me that traditionally men earned more than women so could afford to pay.
all they are doing is controlling possible trouble later on. if there was 3 blokes with 1 girl theyd probably let you in. this is nothing new, whenever we went out on the lash we always made sure that we entered pubs/clubs in small enough groups to go un-noticed
This does seem quite unfair and I hate to admit this about my own gender but more often than not , it's drunken women who can be worth a watching ! Having worked behind the bar in pubs/nightclubs throughout my late teens to mid twenties . I have seen more than my fair share of scraps involving vicious women who rip clumps out of each other's hair and one even shoved her stiletto into another girl's face. Probably one of the worst attacks which I saw , was a revenge attack by a girl who's sister had been assaulted the previous week by the girl whom she then attacked. She strolled in casually after paying her money at the door , walked up to the girl calmly , lifted a solid glass ashtray from the table and smashed it hard into her face. The girl collapsed in agony and as the door stewards came running to the scene - not having seen what had happened but noticing the huge crowd now surrounding the poor girl - the attacker calmly but quickly left the nightclub and because she didn't break into a run , she drew no attention to herself and got away with it. Vicious ! More often than not the same type of women will turn on others for chatting up someone whom they fancy/an existing boyfriend and I've seen them headbutt , spit on and verbally abuse the stewards who are trying to break up their scuffles. It's women like that who give the rest of us a bad name. Is this the new breed of ladettes ? They are animals and a disgrace to the rest of the female population.
Funnily enough though , women do get refused entry too. A good few years ago now , my hubby (then boyfriend )and I took my brother out to celebrate his 18th birthday. The group was split about 50-50 male and female. I tried to tell my brother not to wear trainers as he would be refused entry to nearly all of the half decent pubs and clubs but he knew best and wouldn't listen , insisting that he had trendy , designer trainers and that it would be okay. We got refused EVERYWHERE but nothing would do , he wanted to try his luck at getting into a nightclub. The steward refused us entry but not because of little bruv's trainers .... he said that we were too drunk ! We wished. We were stone cold sober and hadn't even had as much as a sniff ! We ended up in a grotty old man's pub which smelled of cat pee and I cursed my brother all night. Still , he knows better now !
The intrinsic problem is that these neanderthals are all p!55ed with power.
Quite true archbishop. In this case I don't think there is any recourse but being refused for some reasons would get them in trouble. It's the law in other businesses as far as I know so I don't see why pubs should be any different
I have a lot of male friends and when we go out clubbing we make sure we get talking to a group of girls in the queue or before heading there so that it looks like we are 50/50. Bouncers are just doing their job, it's what they are told to do so you can't really blame them, it is down to the management. Why not try talking to the manager of the bar about it if it really is an issue for you (ie if you want to go there again?). Getting to know the bouncers at our local Yates helps us to queue jump and ensure that my male friends are always let in no matter what the ratio of girl/boy is.

thanks everyone apprecaite responses but what bugs me is where do they draw a line. what they done is the same as saying "sorry mate too many blacks in here tonight you can't come in or sorry too many gays or sorry too many chinese or sorry to many muslims" its all the same. Agree with response further up if they had turned us away with a different response then fine but they should not have said that. Equal opportunities said that this was a breach of the sexual discrimination act 1975 as it was a public place and they should not have said that. So piano and pitcher can kiss my hairy ass from now on. Someone else will get my money.
I agree that they can do pretty much what they want in terms of who is allowed in. But get in touch with your local paper; I bet they'd love to run a story about a chain pub using young women as bait for men and they also like any story that criticises bouncers. A bit of bad publicity for them will make you feel better.
I'm not sure it does constitute sexual discrimination. Although I'm not an expert on corporate law, I'm sure a company can choose to whom it supplies its products and services. Doesn't Diamond offer motoring insurance to just women? I don't think that a public house (despite its name) even constitutes a public place as it is owned by a company. The problem is that you're probably a white middle-class British-born male (like me) and you now have fewer rights than everyone else. That's positive discrimination for you and you're right to stay away.
The intrinsic problem is that these neanderthals are all p!55ed with power. Amateur pop psychology at its absolute worst. The guys just have a job to do and the punters in the pub would very quickly get bored of the place if it was full of guys with no girls. Why don't you just get over it and try a different pub - you do not have any divine right to be able to go into any pub you choose. You have to be permitted entry, it's that simple.
BTW - even Top Gear enforces a strict 1:1 ratio of male:female audience members!

ok i'll drop it but the place wasn't even full of blokes. and yes you're right it doesn't pay to be a white honest working class man in this country anymore, you just get **** one. I'm gonna open my own pub and am only going to allow girls with big tits in!!!
That would be tour absolute right to do so.
yes unfortunately the others are right, perfectly legit to do this altho it might **** you off quite a bit. Happens in other areas tho, e.g. golf clubs with no women memberss etc.
were you up in london by any chance? its pretty common, i've lost count of the number of times i've been refused entry to clubs etc and had to pay over the odds to get into clubs my female friends have dashed into as they could go in for free... i just stopped bothering in the end, yes its annoying but its just life SO BACK OF THE BUS FOR YOU my friend
Spezza 123, your idea of only letting girls with big tits in isn't original, one word Stringfellows.
