Taking the family to Turkey next month (Marmaris) What's the best way to manage the spending money? I'm thinking of using my debit card at the cash machines and drawing out cash every couple of days. are travellers cheques ok? any suggestions,

thanks in advance.....

Don't know about Turkey in particular (never been) but travellers cheques are usually the safest way of taking money abroad. If you lose them/get them stolen you can get replacements very quickly, if you lose your debit card you're stuffed!
went to marmaris last summer...surprisingly the locals prefer s to local currency. I took a bunch of local currency and travellers cheques. but if i went again, I'd just take a whole wad of pounds. have fun! btw, i highly recommend doing one of the local boat trips round the islands. have fun!
in marmaris theres a great big market up next to the pineta hotel . as hugoboss says they prefer pounds to liras so i wouldnt bother changing your money . be prepared to haggle but some great bargains to be had. hope you have a great time.

this is vinnys son talking... ive just returned from marmaris it was wkd, all the foods really cheap and it wont cost as much as you think, i took 200 pounds worth of YTL and my debit card, but dont forget that when you arive you have to pay 10 for a turkish visa if you havnt already got one. i reccomend bar X and any resturants with outdoor entertainment "There great!". have fun.

Hi Alan

No problems with debit cards in ATMs in Marmaris if they both have a Visa or Cirrus symbol on it. A 10 note per person is required at Turkish immigration in the airport of arrival in lieu of a visa application. Hard currency is always acceptable but why withdraw from your bank and carry it around with you before you need it. TCs are always a good bet to leave in the hotel safe should you lose your plastic and cash. Have a wondeful time in a beautiful place. Emilio

I have been holidaying in turkey for the last 11 years. i have used all methods of payment, but i now pay with the locals prefer this but do keep a check on the exchange rates as they change daily. I also had money taken from my account after useing the cash mechines,SO if you do choose to use them make sure you only use the named ones such as hsbc and be carefull that no one is watching you. Turkish poeple are very friendly and will offer to help and 9 out of 10 are nice genuine poeple but do be aware that as in any country you do get the cons so be carefull who you except help from.I am sure you will enjoy your holiday!
