US geography

I wonder if any answerbankers can help settle an argument for me? Can the US state of Louisiana be ever be referred to as being "east coast".

Absolutely NOT - the state of Louisiana is positioned between Arkansas, Texas and Mississippi. This is an area which is known as "The DEEP SOUTH" It is also on the Gulf of Mexico which is on the SOUTH coast of the USA. Your friend seems to be a bit of a Moron.

My name is Paul & I work for the United States geography dept. We are responsible for the classification of the different territories with in the U.S and I'm pleased to inform you that the state of Louisiana is firmly on the East Coast of America. This can be seen in more clarification when you look at the American League baseball teams, the Louisiana team play in the East coast league, also inhabitants of New Orleans proudly refer to their annual Mardi Gras festival as the biggest party on the East Coast. Blam!

It's a matter of definition. For some purposes, the combined East/South coast can be regarded as a single "east" coast if it is necessary to maintain a bipolar cultural distinction between East and West, rather than maintaining geographical purity.

Using your logic blamman we can see that Tucson (Arizona) and Las Vegas (Nevada) both play in the Southern League (Baseball). Looking at a map of the USA it is clear that Nevada and Arizona are both to the West of the USA. But they don't even have a Western League !!

Acording to some sources the 'East Coast' means the original thirteen colony states and indeed does include the likes of Louisiana but if you look at any map it is clear that Louisiana is to the South geographically speaking. If we look at it's time zone it is in the central zone!!

When I visited Memphis last year they took great delight in telling me of the good old 'Southern hospitality' and in fact Tennessee is both to the North and East of Louisiana. The same too when I visited New Orleans - many there considered themselves 'The Deep South'.

I guess it just depends on where you come from.
