My eldest Son has been stopped by the Police driving his girlfriends car, he naively thought he was insured to drive the vehicle, this was not the case. Can anyone explain what the penalty is for this, he is in the last year of his apprenticeship and he really needs to avoid the points for any future job,,,, cheers Tom

If the matter is dealt with by a fixed penalty, it's a 200 fine plus 6 points.

If the matter is heard before a court, the maximum fine is 5000; the sentencing guidelines recommend 6 to 8 points on the driver's licence. (The court can also impose an immediate ban but, based upon what you've written, I think that your son can disregard this possibility).

depending on how long he has had his licence,he could also have it revoked, how long has he held his licence for,if its less then 2 yrs, then he will lose it.
