the first person to record unchained melody was Al Hibbler in 1955,previously done by an orchestra.

It was written for the film 'Unchained' in 1955,where it was sung by Todd Duncan.
also in 55,there were 4 versions in US top 40
Les Baxter No1; Al Hibbler (first vocal) No3;Roy hamilton No6 and June Valli No29. Harry belafonte released it same year as well.
There's quite a good Upbeat Doo Wop version by the Salutations 1963 ish
