Dont give up - shop around til you get a solicitor you're comfortable with. After years of domestic voilence, I left my husband in the marital home 5yr ago taking our daughter with me. He fought and battled NOT to give me everything I was entitled to and constantly threatened to take my daughter off me. I had a very good solicitor with a lot of experience in family law as well as a huge amount of compassion and common sense, she never used any underhand tactics - and finally we settled some 3 yrs later - and he fought hard enough to get me down to accepting an amount of money which wasn't even a third of what i was entitled to, and against the advice of my solicitor, but was fed up with the fighting, I accepted because he strung it out and opposed everything, rightly or wrongly, he got there in the end - I got stung but now we're good pals would you believe. It's amazing how people change, i bet if you were to battle to hang on to whats rightfully yours, your ex may just get fed up and meet you halfway - but don't waste money on cr@p solitors, not only will the job not get done to your satisfaction, but it'll end up costing you more. A good solicitor in family law will draft up proposals to suit both parties, so it's worth finding one. Good luck x
