Did there used to be 3 Ensigns, British, English & Scottish?
I know the Red Ensign was adopted by the Merchant Navy in the early 1800's

The Scottish Red Ensign was in use until 1707. It looked just like the present Merchant Navy Red Ensign, but bore a Scottish saltire instead of a Union Flag. (Some Scots will be seen using it today on their private craft!!).

Currently...
White Ensign - Royal Navy
Red Ensign - Merchany Navy
Blue Ensign - Royal Navy Reserve, and some yacht clubs.
