ipod and itunes

Hi again folks

You've never let me down before, and hopefully someone will come through with an answer to this one !

I received a new ipod as a Christmas gift and, upon attempting to install itunes so that I can load it up with some of the dross I listen to, I repeatedly get a Microsoft error message asking me do I wish to report/not to report the fault ....

The installation process seems to go fine, but when I attempt to open the itunes icon I'm faced with the message telling me that a fatal error occurred during installation .....

The error message is vague to say the least and repeated attempts at uninstalling and reinstallation of the software meet with the same message ....

I've tried the 'repair' option in itune.exe, but that too throws up an error ..... again, the error message is vague ....

If any of you guys encountered this and were successful in repairing it, I'd be eternally grateful !!

Try downloading itunes from a different location, it may be a corrupt download.

Thank you for your reply ....

Tried downloading itunes from elsewhere, however, some sights wish you to pay for it, and the free ones all seem to default to the Apple site and download it from there .... and the problem still exists ....

Don't think Apple's download of itunes would be corrupt .... would it ..... ????!!!! ; )

Was watching the installation process, and have more information regarding the fault ....

During installation, a window opens up with the following message -

'Status - Starting Services
Service - Ipob Service'

This remains open for a few seconds, then an error message as follows appears -

'Ipod service (Ipod service) failed to start. Verify you have sufficient privileges to start system services.'

EH ???????!!!!!!

HELP ???????!!!!!!!

Assuming you're on windows XP, can you make sure you're an administrator?

Click start, then goto control panel. Now find the 'users' icon, which will list all the user accounts on your computer. Yours should say 'computer administrator' next to it. Does it?

It does show me as Computer Administrator .... Guest is switched off ....

Have you used iTunes previously? Try going into add/remove programs, and removing all stuff to do with iPod, iTunes and Quicktime, then restart and downloading the setup file again from apple:

http://www.apple.com/itunes

(you can untick the checkboxes near the download button so you don't have to supply an email address.)

Does that work?

Firstly, thank you for your help to date ....

To answer your question, yes, I have used itunes before and without a hitch .... 'til now !!

I tried what you suggested regarding removing itunes, ipod and Quicktime .... itunes deleted save for a couple of files I wasn't allowed to delete, however, Quicktime would not allow me to delete any part of it ....

C:\WINDOWS\system32\Quicktime\uninstall.log

was displayed as soon as I reied to remove it ....

I couldn't find any programs which referred to ipod to delete 'em.

I then set about reinstalling itunes and immediately noticed that it downloaded a helluva lot quicker than it did the first time I installed it .... which makes me think that some elements of it are hiding away in the bowels of my pc and may be causing my problems !!

I was then met with the same Microsoft error message when I tried to run it I'm afraid ....

I even went to the lengths of using System Restore and took the PC right back to long before I ever went near itunes !!!

Still, to no avail .... I'm getting the same message ....

Any further help would be very much appreciated ....

I'm having the exact same problem.

During the install process, when it says 'moving files' I can see the ipodservice disappear from my list of services in the contol panel (note: you have to switch to the services listing and keep pressing F5 to refresh the list during the install process to see it disappear in real time).

When the installer says 'starting ipodservice' nothing happens, since the service has been deleted!

When I cancel the installation, and it rolls back, the service comes right back and my original iTunes installation (6.0.4.2) works fine.

If I figure out what's causing this I'll post my findings.

I am having this exact same problem!! I have tried everything the same way too, from system reboot to uninstalling and reinstalling iTunes multiple times.

I even got the same : 'Ipod service (Ipod service) failed to start. Verify you have sufficient privileges to start system services.'

Some google responses have said that the problem may be with my Norton Internet Secrity Service, so I went into the firewall and made sure it was allowing iTunes, I downloaded updates, and I simply diabled Norton in an attempt to open iTunes. None of it worked.
If you have Norton too, you could try to disable your firewall and see if that works for you.

Its absolutely ridiculous and I cannot find any possible solution. Extremely frustrating.

If you find a solution be sure to let the rest of us in on your secret. :) HELP HELP HELP!!!!

Have a solution of sorts but I'm pretty sure you ain't gonna like it !!

It appears that when I was attempting to uninstall iTunes, I only partially managed it, traces of it remaining following my botched removal attempt ....

What I then found was that part of the uninstaller software had 'gone' with the first uninstall, but with traces of iTunes still remaining and the uninstaller software being incomplete, I couldn't remove the remaining traces of iTunes .... I then got the error message that we're both very familiar with .... dunno if that makes sense ....??!!

However, to cut a long story very boring, I had to save everything of value in my pc .... and then had to format it !!

It was the certainly the cheapest solution and the onlt one that the computer guys could come up with where I work as even they were baffled !!

I just fixed my problem by just reinstalling Windows XP..I guess there was some curruption somewhere. Thanks for the help.
