Potatoes sprouting Tomato like growth ?

I have been growing potatoes for several years now and my latest crop (I can't remember what type but they are red) has tomato like bunches growing on every plant ! What are they and should I pull them off ? Have tried the potatoes they are as ever superb .

You can process the seeds they contain to sow another crop next year. Though the variety will remain true, you'll get fewer actual potatoes (tubers) than before.

Hi Creepy, The tomatoe- like growths on the tops of your potato plants are the true fruits of the potato plant which contain the true seeds of the plant, these will follow on from the flowers once pollenated but they are not edible like tomatoes although they belong to the same (solanacae) family which also includes the infamous deadly nightshade (beladona) and tobaco.
You dont always get to see these potato fruits as the potato's are usually ready for harvest when you see the flowers appear.
The part of the potato that we eat are in fact root tubers, even though we call the tubers for planting ' seed potato's '
