Flat Screen Monitors

Is there any regulation in which your employer must issue a flat screen monitor. I currently use an old type monitor which is causing me problems due to having an astigmatism in my eye. By reducing the glare my optician has said this will help me not get eye strain etc.. My employer doesn't want to supply one so I need to find out my rights. Thanks for your responses in advance.

I do not know much about regulations, however it would be more cost effective to purchase an anti-glare screen cover. You could suggest that as an alternative.

Your employer has a duty to carry out a Display Screen Equipment assessment (DSE regs 1992). This may also take the form of a self assessment questionnaire. Some of the areas covered are the suitability of your screen, glare, viewing angle, flicker free image etc. Other areas include the workstation, eye discomfort and other health effects. You are also entitled to free eye checks.

No they don't! Everyone in my office still has the old type of monitors - except me (luckily the electrical testing guy condemned my old monitor as an electrical death trap) and I'm not aware of any info that says the new flat screen monitors are any better for your eyes - I also have an astigmatism and have noticed absolutely no difference since swapping monitors (other than a lot more space on my desk!)

your best bet is to request a free eye test from your HR department and when you go for the test,mention this to him. it maybe that the monitor you are using is too close because your desk isnt big enough where as with flat screens, they can be pushed further back.
