I have no periods now at all - I did have a light period for about 3 weeks then little bits every now and then, a few light periods (only needed a pad) but now nothing. I havent had any side effects - maybe a bit sensitive headaches every now and then - I would recommend it.

nannon I would echo Genius to the very word. It is utterly amazing; the only bad exp was when I had a new one fitted last month - just a slight discomfort for a day, that is all.
It has hormones which it releases over a 5 year span, till they run out basically.
Do you have kids? I had my first fitted about 2 years after kids; it was far more comfortable then than last month (my youngest is now 8) as the cervix was no longer so, er , flexible.

Hi nannon! Since the age of 20 i have had a coil replaced reguraly of course.
The first time i did end up with a massive infection and nearly lost my tubes .
the coil is preferable for a women who had childrens already but check that one.
It gave me longer , heavier, painful periods. The insertion is little incomfortable but you should not feel it after and neither your partner.
there are no side effect and should not put on weight or getting spots.
Of course i am 45 now and hubby has had the snip and i use to have the copper coil but things have changed and improved since check it with your gp .

I can really recommend the Mirena coil, I used to suffer with the most horrendously heavy periods until I had one fitted getting on for 5 years ago(so i'm due another soon). I can honestly say I really wish I had done it sooner, it is painless and has left me with wonderfully scant periods(2 days with a pant liner-no more sanitary towels!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!)I cant speak for the contraceptive aspect though as the OH has had the snip.
