I have recently rec'd two DVDs, one from NZ and one from UK, and after they arrived it turned out they are in PAL format and when my player tries to read them I get an error. I suspect PAL is not compatible with the format of the DVD players in America? Any ideas aboutt how to render these things useable? Or am I just out of luck? thanks!

A friend of mine who lives in America had the same problem when i sent him a PAL dvd. From what i gather from him he only had 2 options either buy a convertor that would let you play PAL dvds or try & find the cheapest dvd machine that could be turned to multi region & also play PAL.I don't know if this matters but does your tv have to be able to be PAL playback also.
Go to vcdhelp.com and then find your dvd player model number and u will more than likeley find a code to make your DVD players multi region its usually just by typing a few numbers into your remote.

THANKS Bob. I went to that site and don't really know what to enter where. Can yu please supply a little more info?
wzlwmn, if you go to WWW.dvdhacks.co.uk, and click on the hacksearch option at the top of the screen, you can then search for your DVD players hack code. I have used it a couple of times befor and it worked fine.
Mosts DVD players have some form of hack accessible through the remote which will render them region free. Panasonics are notably somewhat trickier for some reason (I have one...grrr...). If all else fails you could download a trial copy of DVD-idle onto your PC, which will allow you to watch your DVDs on your PC, but the registered version of this program costs $49. You can probably pick up a new region-free DVD player for that :o)
