what to do in London

My girlfriend is visiting London for the first time in August, she will be staying with me for a week. What are the essential things to do/see in one week? Are there any free museums etc?

most of our museums are free to visit,ie all the big ones in london,the private ones usually charge

London Eye/Buckingham Palace/Trafalgar Square/Houses of Parliament/Tower of London/go on the tube/St Pauls/Westminster Cathedral/Harrods/Oxford Street/Covent Garden/Petticoat Lane/Madame Tussauds/Natural History Museum/Science Museum/at least one park (Regents or Hyde).

Museum of London is extremely good if you're interested in history. Free.

aswell as the above......depending on your budget perhaps see a west end show.....open top bus tour (if the weather sorts itself out!), portobello or camden markets are good for browsing and at times celeb spotting........ for a night out try the Comedy Store or Jongleurs

If she's here a whole week - do a day in Greenwich. Arrive by boat (from Waterloo or Tower Bridge) then see the park, observatory and market (and the recently burnt Cutty Sark).Nice restaurants and pubs including down by the river. Sweet.

On the Museum front the museum by the observatory is good and it's free. There's the National Maritime Museum, which is impressive if not my cup of tea and here's a little known fact for you... Greenwich is also home to Europe's only Fan museum!!

We are on a budget, I know, its London, and everything is overpriced, but really, I reckon we will do the essentials and a few museums like Science Museum, Maddam Tussauds..

Whenever I've been by Tussauds the queue is a mile long. You can pay extra to jump the queue but I'm told it's not so great anyway. You might find better and cheaper things to do with your time

ok thanks for the tip. To be honest Ive never been to Tussuards, but if its not impressive then we shall avoid it.

If you'd like to take in a show, try the half-price ticket booth in Leicester Sq - sells unsold tickets on the day of the show (in the morning for matinees, then for the evening). You never know what will come up, of course, might all be rubbish, but the lists are written up outside. It's the one actually in the square, not the ticket shops around the outside.

Tate Modern is quite good to go to, as it is a brilliant locaion, in an iconic building, and it's free.
