what size mini digger is best for digging out footings?
the options were one and a half ton , or 3 ton.

More to the point, how much room have you got to get it into the back garden (or Wherever)? Both will do the job if its just footings for an extension or something. If its a completely new house, go for the bigger machine as you will literally have room to manoevure.
