Hi people, i have been offered a male kitten. I have heard horror stories about them spraying their urine at a certain age to mark their territory.

At what age does this start ? And would getting the kitten spayed stop it doing it ?

Thanks in advance.

HI Neil, Dont panic ! Male kittens are usually the most affectionate than female ones, as for them spraying - this wont happen until they are at least 8 months old, I have always had male cats and had them neutered at around 7 months.....getting them neutered will stop the spraying. Enjoy your little chap ! He sounds delightful!

Thanks for your quick responce, what are they like after they have been neutered. Does it change there temprement...
No not at all ! They will be the same cat as before, please dont worry.....having them neutered also stops them getting into nasty fights and getting injuries from other male tom cats in the vicinity.
Hi Neil please don't worry about your kitten he will be fine I have only had boy cats and they are more affectionat when spayed they don't want to go out so much like Tara said if you get him done at about 6 months old as some become more mature quicker than others.
I hope you injoy your kitten.

Sorry to be a pain but is it straight forward when they get neutered, thanks
You would need to get him neutered befre he started spraying, we didnt with one of our males, and when we had other cats in the house he would spray like mad!
He even sprayed me when i was lying on the sofa :( But we got our other boys done early and they are both fine!
And all our male cats are very very loving, cant get enough cuddles!
It is straight forward!
We just dropped our boys off at the vets the night before as could not get to the vets in the morning, then the next day the phoned me to say they were fine and waking up and then pick them up in the evening!
Cost us around 35 for each of our boys

At what age can we get him done at the moment he is still with his mom cause he is only 3weeks old,we are having him in a few weeks time,i have been told i will need to worm him as well, and just in case de-flea him, this is all new to me so sorry if i sound dim!
As young as 6 months I would say, but best get a vet to advise, kittens mature at different rates.

Thanks Tara 999,you have been very helpful,Thanks to everyone else who have replied.
neutering will not stop them spraying.....believe me...i have a neutered male sprayer to prove it. he started doing it because neighbourhood cats wandered into our conservatory and he is also quite an emotional little soul who is easily upset. also i have 2 more cats..one male and one female and this spraying often occurs in a multi-cat household...altho' the other male does'nt do it. Very complex business i'm afraid and almost impossible to stop them doing it once they start ....just have to use coping methods. having said all that you probably won't have a problem if u keep it to a 1 cat home. I love my little boy to bits and so I have to just clean up after him and there are good products on the market to deal with the cleaning. good luck if you go ahead...and i'm sure it will be fine and you won't have a problem at all. males are more affectionate generally...but they are all purrrfect are'nt they.
