Shift Work notice
Hi, I have just started a new job, when interviewed I asked about shift patterns and was told there was an 8-4, 9-5 and a 1-9 shift pattern, I asked how this worked and was told that he had not made up his mind exactly, but said that it could be 1 week on each shift, I stated in my interview the reason for leaving my last job was not seeing my family so did not want to do lots of lates.
Anyway after starting the job I have found that the manager will not tell you what shift you are for the next week till Friday morning or Friday afternoon (nothing like giving you notice), also it sound like people work a week of lates and a week earlies which was deliberately witheld.
I would like to know if there is any legislation stating when a roster should be issued and for how long it should be scheduled for. Common sense would dictate that if you are on shift you should know what you are doing at least 2 weeks ahead or a month.
Any information would be appreciated, thanks.

i used to work shifts in a late shop, and i'd get less than a weeks notice for my shifts - no one ever complained, so i assume it was normal. of all the staff, only mine varied all over the show, but i was the only student working there so they probably figured 'she hasn't got her own family, she can do all the late nights and early starts'. eg. 4 hours til 10pm then maybe a 10 hour shift the following morning from 6am. nice!
good luck x
