I have two large earthenware tubs (approx. 24" x 18") which contain last year's compost. Having half-emptied the same, intending to 'top-up' with fresh compost, then shallow-root planting, I see one pot seething with small black ants, and the other with small light-brown ants. Can I safely proceed as planned, or should I dump everything first? In other words will the ants damage my plants if left undisturbed ?
I had the same problem - I emptied the contents out and poured a kettle of boiling water on them. I don't know if they will damage your plants if you leave them, but they could migrate into your house and you'd have a bigger problem!
