Painting wooden garage doors
4 Answers
I need to gloss my garage doors but absolutely hate using sandpaper (probably because I am no good at sanding). Would it be easier to buy a heat gun to try to burn off the old paint (not that I have much idea how much these cost). Any advice on how to prepare them would be much appreciated.

Thanks Ray - they are currently glossed. I don't have a sander and have never lusted after one ........ If it is a matter of just scoring the paint then I guess I will have to grit my teeth and just get on with it. I had assumed that I should remove pretty much all of the existing gloss before starting painting
Hi sunsocks, I don't blame you i have never lusted after one either, lol, you do not need to remove all the paint, get a rough grade sandpaper and a sanding block, also get some smooth grade, the shop will advise you as to grade, tell them what you are doing and they will give you the correct paint, I would go to a specialist decorators to get the stuff because they will advise you correctly, but it is not that bad a job, good luck, Ray
Hi sunsocks Ray is absolutely right about the preparation but I would recommend two coats of oil based undercoat for external situations then one top coat it will be a lot easier with 4" semi pile roller use slowly then use brush to get to bits missed by the roller, use floor sheets to protect any sprinkles .HTH Tez
