for goodness sake, if the light got broken while you were in charge, just pay up!
They could take you to court if they were minded to, but i would imagine it would be hard to prove it was done while in your possesion, unless you've admitted it
Why dont you just pay up
Yes they can take you to court..and you will end up with a far bigger bill than you were originally given.

I can't understand why they didn't take a deposit from you, but you would be wise to pay for the light.
you should pay it and be more careful next time
Why is it exactly that you feel you're not liable to pay for the broken light? What do you mean by, "the rear light got broke"? It didn't break itself did it? They could certainly take you to court even if just to set an example. Then as Pippa points out, you'll be paying a much bigger bill (you'll be landed with the court costs etc.)

Part of the rental charge would be insurance, if you took the option of paying extra to have collision damage waiver and no excess then the insurance will cover the repair.

If you took the basic insurance there would be an excess which you are liabel for, the value of the light is likley to be less then the excess so you would be liabel for the whole cost.

They may take you to court because they have a signed contract which clearly states your liability.
